As a dental office, we aim to help patients preserve all their natural teeth for their lifetime. However, sometimes injuries, disease, or issues with how a tooth grows in your mouth can lead to the need for a tooth extraction. At Cannon Dental, Dr. David Cannon and our team provide a gentle, comfortable extraction experience for patients in the Salt Lake City, Utah area, should the need arise.
Why A Tooth Extraction May Be Necessary
Dr. Cannon might recommend tooth extractions for the following reasons, among others:
- Severe tooth decay
- Advanced gum disease
- Breaks or fractures that cannot be repaired
- Impacted teeth (teeth that cannot erupt out of the gums due to the way they are growing). We do not extract wisdom teeth in the office but can help refer you to an outside dental professional.
- To prepare the mouth for orthodontic treatment
If you are in immense pain or a tooth infection is threatening the health of the surrounding tissues, an emergency tooth extraction might be warranted.
What To Expect
We use modern dental anesthetics to keep you comfortable and pain-free throughout the extraction process. After we numb the tooth, gums, and bone in the area where the tooth will be removed, we use specialized dental tools to rock the tooth back and forth firmly but gently, which helps us remove it from the tooth socket. During this process, you will feel pressure, but the anesthetic will prevent you from feeling pain.
After the procedure is complete, we will give you all the tooth extraction care instructions you need post-treatment. While some pain and swelling are expected for the first few days, ice packs can help reduce swelling, and we will provide you options for pain medication to make you feel comfortable until the pain subsides. We will furnish you with a list of signs you might need to come back due to complications, such as unmanageable pain or uncontrolled bleeding. In addition, Dr. Cannon will discuss your options for replacing the extracted tooth because missing teeth can negatively impact various oral health functions and your self-confidence.
At Cannon Dental, we are here to make the tooth extraction experience as comfortable and worry-free as possible. To schedule your appointment, feel free to use the online scheduling feature or call us at (801) 406-9985.
