Immediate Dentures

If you need all of your remaining natural teeth extracted, choosing a tooth replacement option so you can eat, speak, and smile normally again can be stressful. At Cannon Dental, Dr. David Cannon and our team of dental professionals are here to help ease Salt Lake City, UT area patients through this transition with options like immediate dentures. This is a terrific tooth replacement option that enables patients to get extractions and dentures in the same day so they don’t have to go for any length of time without teeth.

Immediate Dentures -How do they work

How do immediate dentures work?

Immediate dentures are made using dental impressions that we take of your teeth prior to your tooth extractions. We use these impressions to fabricate natural-looking, functional dentures. Once they are ready, we schedule your extraction appointment, at which time we perform your dental extractions and then place your dentures immediately afterwards. We can make both immediate complete dentures to restore a full arch of missing teeth or immediate partial dentures to replace one or a few missing teeth.

Considerations with immediate dentures

Because the extractions and placement of your denture occur in the same appointment, there is no way for us to check the fit of your denture prior to the extraction. This means that there may be some compromises made in terms of aesthetics (due to inadequate space or structural problems) in order to have your denture placed on the same day.

It is also important to be aware that a permanent denture reline will be necessary after your gums and other tissues heal post-extraction. The reason for this is that as the tissues heal, they may change in shape, which affects how your denture fits. Because having an ideal fit is essential for your denture to function properly and feel comfortable, we will closely evaluate how it fits over time and whether any changes need to be made.

After you receive your immediate dentures

We will provide you with thorough after-care instructions, which are important to follow closely to help ensure that you have as successful of a recovery and adjustment period as possible.

  • Because your bone and gums will change over time after your teeth are extracted, we will schedule routine check-ups and maintenance appointments to monitor how your tissues are healing and to check the fit of your dentures
  • For an optimal fit, tissue conditioners and/or temporary linings are typically required; these have separate fees and may need to be replaced or adjusted multiple times during the healing process
  • We are here for you every step of the way to help you adjust to your new life with dentures!
