Who doesn’t like a perfect set of healthy teeth? While this dream is always within your reach, it requires dedication and infusion of certain practices in your oral hygiene regimen. At Cannon Dental in Salt Lake City, Utah, we are here to share good dental hygiene habits for a healthy, confident smile.
Brush daily
While brushing is good for your teeth, any brushing won’t cut it. If you don’t brush your teeth as recommended by the American Dental Association, you will likely miss several spots in your mouth, encouraging the growth of plaque and tartar.
A good brushing should last at least two minutes. Use specific movements for about 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth. Spend about 5 seconds on each tooth, brushing its front, upper and back surface. Don’t forget to scrape your tongue gently to remove harmful bacteria that cause bad breath.
Floss daily
Whether you believe it or not, your toothbrush can only clean around 60% of your tooth’s surface. That’s not our word — it’s research done by the Oral Health Foundation. With this in mind, you need to floss in between your teeth and under the gum line — these areas are hardly reached by your toothbrush.
Avoid sugary foods
We know that chocolates, candies, and cakes are tempting, but limit their intake to save your teeth. When sugar is left on your teeth, bacteria feast on it, producing acidic substances that erode your enamel. The results? Tooth cavities that lead to tooth decay if not treated.
Visit your dentist regularly
Your daily at-home oral care practices are excellent, but some things can only be done by a dentist. Visit a dentist every six months for regular oral exams and dental cleanings. During these appointments, we examine your oral health and clean your teeth professionally to eliminate tartar in hard-to-reach areas of your mouth.
