Dentures do more than just replace part or all of an arch of teeth that have been lost or extracted. They provide support for your cheeks and lips, restoring your natural facial appearance, and enable you to both speak and eat with confidence again. At Cannon Dental, we offer a comprehensive array of denture services to patients in the Salt Lake City, Bountiful, West Valley, Holladay, and surrounding UT communities.
All about dentures
Dentures are a set of false teeth that are designed to look and feel like natural teeth, which are attached to a pink acrylic base that mimics the appearance of your gums.
Traditionally, dentures were used to replace a full arch of lost teeth – either the upper or lower arch, or both – and were fully removable for cleaning and care. However, advances in dental techniques and materials have led to a variety of denture options to meet a wide range of patient needs. Now, patients can choose between dentures that are removable or fixed in place, full or partial dentures, implant-supported dentures or those that stay in place with natural suction, and many other options. Dr. Cannon is here to help you determine the specific custom denture configuration that is best for your individual oral health needs, preferences, and budget.
- Conventional dentures are designed based on dental impressions that we take after all of your extractions have taken place and your gums and other tissues have had time to heal. Upper dentures typically cover the roof of the mouth, whereas a lower denture is more horseshoe-shaped to allow room for the tongue to move freely while eating and speaking. Conventional dentures are fully removable and held in place with natural suction and/or denture adhesives.
- Immediate dentures are created based on dental impressions that are taken before your extractions, which enables us to place the denture immediately after your extractions. Because the structures in your mouth change shape during the healing process, adjustments after the tissues are healed are often necessary with immediate dentures.
- Implant-supported dentures are a great option for patients who want more stability in their dentures; they blend the functionality and appearance of dentures, which replace the full arch of teeth, along with the stability and support of strategically placed dental implants.
It is important to understand that even if you wear dentures and have no natural teeth, it is still essential for your oral health that you visit the dentist for regular dental examinations and denture maintenance.
